Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight- Travis Scott

Two posts in as many days from your boy? You better believe it. Yesterday Isaiah Rashad dropped a new album that highlighted the morning but later in the day another highly anticipated album came out.  Travis Scott dropped his sophomore album “Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight” after many delays. But the wait is over and the music is amazing.  The production on this album is fantastic, but that is to be expected with Scott.  His vocals and stylistic approach also work to make this album a worthy follow-up to his highly acclaimed debut album “Rodeo.”  The album also features some great guest appearances from the likes of The Weeknd, Kendrick, and Andre 3000…just to name a few.  The album is an apple exclusive for the time being, so listen there if you are a subscriber.  If not, go find it elsewhere or wait for it to hit Spotify in a few weeks.  Summer may be coming to a close but the good music keeps on giving.  Enjoy!

Weekly Hip-Hop/R&B Review (3/19-3/25)

Do you want to know how I got these scars? [Joker voice] Funny story actually: I was running with a towel on from my little plastic kiddie pool into the house. Ma and Pa tried to tell me not to run but in my youthful exuberance I had not one care. I dashed towards the house with the towel wrapped around my lower body like a bat out of hell. I approached the stone steps that would lead my onto the deck. That’s when, out of nowhere, I went down…hard. The towel caught on the stone, dragging me down face first like the rug had just been pulled out from under me. Blood poured out of my lip and tears were shed. I received 11 stitches that day and became a changed man. A man out for vengeance against stone ledges everywhere. A man known to the world as Scarface.

OK, enough with my anecdote; let’s get to the good stuff. Really strong week for music so this one is going to be a bit long. Buckle up and let’s ride.

PartyNextDoor drops first single off his upcoming album

If PND’s album is going to be like this song, then we are in for a treat. This song is a perfect chill-out, calm-down song full of emotion. Plus, Drake adds his rapping/singing talents to it so what’s not to like?

Styles P drops three hot freestyles

No surprise to hear Styles P is still killing it one instrumental at a time. Listen to three new freestyles over Fat Joe’s “All the Way Up,” Kanye West’s “Real Friends,” and Drake’s “Summer Sixteen.”

Please stop sleeping on Rittz

Rittz is probably one of the best rappers you’ve never heard of. His lyrical ability and multitude of flows are incredible. But now is your chance to get on board. He is signed to Tech N9ne’s label and is about to drop his debut album. “Ghost Story” is the first single of the project and anticipation is rising fast.

Ty Dolla $ign re-releases “Free TC” with some new dope tracks included

New cuts include “Long Time” featuring Quavo, “Westside,” “Wavy,” and “Like a Drug.”

Larry Fisherman (aka Mac Miller) creates tribute to Phife Dawg

Whenever Mac produces a track, he usually uses the Larry Fisherman moniker. Thursday, he released this tribute track to Phife Dawg. It features a medley of verses and live recordings from the fallen emcee. A nice ode to the legend that I’m sure Phife is smiling about up in heaven.

This week’s Tinashe leak is called “They’re On”

As we wait patiently for Tinashe to release her sophomore album “Joyride,” new material keeps popping up on the internet every week. “They’re On” may or may not be on the album and the DJ Mustard produced track may or may not find its way to a club near you.

How to squash a rap beef 101: make a movie together

It has been years since Common and Ice Cube famously took shots at each other on wax but we can now officially say the beef is squashed. Cube and Common are co-starring in the upcoming “Barbershop 3” film and recorded this extraordinarily trill song together for the soundtrack. Enjoy.

Your Old Droog bringing the heat

Remember what I said about Rittz being one of the best rappers you’ve never heard of? Same applies here. If you are not familiar with Droog’s work, please take some time and check his music out. The similarities to Nas are uncanny. This song also features dope verses from fellow NYC rappers Joey Bada$$ and Styles P over a grimy beat.

I’m loving the new Royce every week

No secret that I love Royce Da 5’9. As we get closer to the release of both “Trust the Shooter” and “Layers,” Royce keeps releasing new songs that are incredible lyrical displays. As DJ Khaled would say, “Savages” is “another one.”

A$AP Ferg and ScHoolboy Q team up on “Let it Bang”

HOO! HOO! HOO! This song is hard. This is that song put on when you’re about to fight and you wanna get your mean mug game on point. Just throw this on and let it bang.

Tha Carter III Wayne is back!

Now-a-days it seems like every time Wayne drops a song, people say, “Man, I miss the old Wayne.” Well, it’s your lucky day because Streetrunner just released a song from Tha Carter III’s recording sessions. “Let’s Talk it Over” is vintage Wayne spitting over a soulful beat that samples Lenny Williams’ “Let’s Talk About It.” Straight FIRE!

Young Thug (finally) releases “Slime Season 3”

I am not really a big fan of Thugger but I do enjoy some of his songs and I know he has a large following so I couldn’t think of a good reason not to post this. Especially because I’ll definitely listen to it at least once, just to see how it feels and you should too. You’d never know what you like without trying it first. That’s a saying, right?

Domo Genesis’s debut album also hits the shelves (or streaming/digital services)

Last week, you heard the song featuring Anderson Paak off the album (which is an absolute jam). This week you are blessed with the entire project.

But wait, that’s not all!

Still going here with two more album releases. What an incredible week. Both Father and K Michelle drop their albums “I am a Piece of Shit” and “More Issues Than Vogue” respectively.

Alright, that’s enough music to last about a month, let alone a week. But it’s always good to have options so pick and choose what you want to bump this week. Don’t forget to check out “Just a Lil Bit” and “Show Me Love” which were posted earlier this week. Two last notes: T-Pain also released a song and Zayn Malik released his new solo debut. See you next week.

Ty Dolla $ign- LA (ft Kendrick Lamar, Brandy, James Fauntleroy)

The West Coast has been in full swing this year.  Releases from Kendrick, Dr. Dre, and Game (to name a few) have put the West back on top of their game. The trend continues as the song “LA” creates a very chill vibe, painting a picture of the city.  You can envision yourself riding around in the beautiful weather. But don’t get too comfy.  The cruel reality is that the city is full of gang members, but these guys still love their city and will rep it till the end. King Kendrick comes in for the second verse, takes the chill vibe created by Ty $, and rips it apart.  His aggression and passion leak onto the song in tremendous fashion. All this coupled with the soulful vocals of Brandy and James Fauntleroy and you have yourself a new hit song.

Angels – Chance The Rapper (feat Saba)

So Chance the Acid Rapper debuted his new song “Angels” last night on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and killed the game. This song is backed by some funky, unique, chancy sounds that work perfectly with Chance’s off the books delivery.

If you play this at your next pregame/party someone is going to walk up to you and shake your hand out of respect. It’s always a good feeling when an artist like this continues to churn out radical, out of this world (literally) songs… Keep it up Chance!

Hello – Adele

Adele is back…

The queen of heartbreak is back and ready to go! If you think you were done with your ex, go ahead and listen to this song…

Adele gave us all a scare when she stopped performing a little while ago because of some medical issues but she’s back and her vocals on this track are a dream. After you are done crying from the original check out this tropical house remix and get happy again:

Be Right There – Diplo & Sleepy Tom

This song goes out to my boy Ian from Boston because it is his birthday. I’m almost 100 percent sure Diplo & Sleepy Tom made this song for Ian’s birthday but you have to ask Diplo yourself (he never returned my text).

This brand new Diplo & Sleepy Tom jam does not disappoint. Like most of the songs we have posted recently, this is an end of the summer banger and when that bass kicks in you will see why.

Lets kick off this syllabus week the right way with Diplo and his friends. Enjoy

Mac Miller – 100 Grandkids

It’s been a minute since we heard some new Mac, and why not start off your Friday listening to his newest single “100 Grandkids”. The Pittsburgh native debuted this song live at Grassroots Festival this past weekend and released this song and video yesterday. He also announced that he’s dropping a new album September 18th, titled GO:OD AM, and after hearing this song, I’m really excited to hear what else Mac has in store.

This two parted song exemplifies Mac Miller’s wordplay skills and untouchable flow. The first part of the song is really upbeat, with a bass-line that is sure to make you bop your head, opposed to the second part which has more of a trap beat. In the first half, Mac raps about his come up and making his first hundred grand. In the second half, he raps about what life is like with all that money. A needy female voice kicks in towards the end portraying the gold diggers that Mac’s encountered since he’s made all that dough. Overall, I was really impressed with the track, and I’m really excited for his album, which you can preorder here.
