The Review (5/7-5/13)

It must be Christmas because Chance The Rapper gave the world a gift today. Let’s see what else dropped this past week.

Lloyd is back from an extended hiatus

You guys and gals remember Lloyd? It seemed like he was one of the go-to guys for hooks in like 2012-2013 and then he just disappeared. Well he is back with his new single “Tru” and it is quite good.

More Chris Brown this week

I don’t have much information on this song, it seems like it might be a leftover or a song he chose to release for no particular reason but nonetheless, this song is beautiful. Backed by piano and guitar, Brown croons soulfully over the beat. This is where Chris Brown really shines in my opinion, when he sings and shows off his incredible voice.

Sean Kingston with the heat!

Sean Kingston tries out a new sound for this new jam “All I Got” and it works well. This version, featuring Migos member Quavo, is hottttt. Kingston kills the hook and Quavo lends a solid verse to make one good song, ready for the dance floor this summer.

Mistah F.A.B., Kendrick, and KXNG Crooked bring the heat

What a song. Kendrick delivers the opening verse and it sounds like an old verse, but that doesn’t matter at all (it’s fire). Then, Kobe sings a dope hook and Mistah F.A.B. drops another solid verse. The song wraps up with a dope verse from KXNG Crooked, who is one of the best lyricists in the game.

Starvation 5 is on the way

I’ve been rocking with Ace Hood since I heard his mixtape “Body Bag.” He always brings an intensity to his raps that is matched by few others. He also has some of the best flows out there year after year. “All The Way G” is worth the listen.

Juicy J and Wiz Khalifa team up for “All Night”

Just your typical turn up song curtesy of Juicy J and Wiz Khalifa with production from TM88.

ScHoolboy Q drops Kanye assisted single “That Part”

Get Top on the phone! The TDE takeover continues with ScHoolboy Q’s new single “That Part,” which features a verse from Kanye West. The two spit over a menacing beat. This song will appear on Q’s upcoming album. Hears to hoping that drops soon.

Chance3 aka “Coloring Book”

Apologies to all the Drake and Kanye stans out there but Chance just dropped the project of the year (so far). The kid is a musical genius and you’ll realize that after just one listen. I have been listening to this all day and will continue to do so for the next week or two or three. Who knows. It is THAT good. Best of all, all of Chance’s music is free. So check this mixtape out, and check out all his old stuff too. You will not be disappointed.

That should cover the good stuff from this week. Enjoy people.

Weekly Hip-Hop/R&B Review (4/15-4/22)

The Pens are one step closer to bringing home the Cup and it’s got me all giddy. Music time:

Big K.R.I.T. remixes Kanye’s “30 Hours”

Big K.R.I.T. remains one of the most slept on artists out there right now. He stays bringing that southern flavor to every track. “$30” is a very, very good remix to an already very, very good song.

4/20 brings some new weed smoking anthems

Dizzy Wright is a very good artist. If you don’t listen to him already, I suggest getting on that. He’s been known to smoke Satan’s salad every now and then and gives the fans a new song to commemorate the big day. Even if you’re like me and don’t indulge, this song is still worth checking out.

Ariana Grande recruits Lil Wayne for new single of upcoming album

There are a lot of dope features on Grande’s upcoming album, “Dangerous Woman.” Lil Wayne was one of my most anticipated and turns out I didn’t have to wait too long. Solid verse from Wayne and Ariana doing her thing throughout earns this song a thumbs up from me.

Harlem goes hard

Jim Jones and A$AP Ferg go in on this banging beat. Turn the volume up all the way and bump this shit.

More 4/20 music courtesy of Snoop Dogg

Snoop dropping a song that’s perfect for a chill smoke sesh? Yeah, could’ve seen that coming. Good to see Snoop is cooking up some good music again.

Another song about getting high

Mac Miller and Dave East link up to create another really chill song this week. They both deliver good verses over the Cardo produced track.

This instrumental is FIRE

I don’t care if you don’t listen to a word of this song but you need to throw on some headphones and take in this beat. The legendary Pete Rock produces a gem featuring some slick horns (which I love).

No list is truly complete without some Migos

Ever been at a party or bar or [random place here] and there’s a ton of attractive ladies around but you don’t say sum? Yeah, me either,  I always talk to girls but if you don’t just listen to this song for some inspiration.

New Bankroll Mafia album

I’ve only heard a couple songs off the project but as a huge fan of T.I., I’m confident I’ll enjoy this. There’s definitely a few bangers in here.

“Always Strive and Prosper” does not disappoint

A$AP Ferg’s new album is well worth the wait. The singles he dropped in advance were all great and the rest of the album holds up as well. “Swipe Life,” “Beautiful People,” and “I Love You” are all must hear songs.

Enjoy this week’s helping of hip-hop and R&B, kids.
