The Review (7/2-7/8)

Suns out, guns out. Let’s take a look back at this week in hip-hop music.

PND & Jeremih drop first song off upcoming joint project

Two of the hottest R&B artists on the planet right now are PartyNextDoor and Jeremih. Their music is great on its own, but teaming up for a joint album is going to be something special, especially if this song is any indication of what’s to come. “Like Dat” is a banger that features a FIRE verse from Wayne (who has been absolutely killing it lately).

Happy Birthday Childish Major

The ATL rapper/producer dropped off a special treat this 4th of July, which also happens to be his birthday. This song is really great and it’s always great when some new Isiah Rashad pops up. These guys are both young and extremely talented with bright futures ahead of them.

Rocketshipshawty 2 on its way

Kid Ink is preparing a follow-up to the mixtape that made him famous. “Lamborghini Dreaming” serves as the first song off the mixtape and it’s smooth as fuck.

Big K.R.I.T. unleashes 12 freestyles in 12 hours

Rather than post all 12 videos, I decided to post a link to K.R.I.T.’s youtube page. Check them all out or just the ones that feature an instrumental you like. You’ll be safe knowing K.R.I.T. does his thing on all of them.

Gucci Mane teams up with…2Pac?

Fresh out the feds, Gucci has been constantly putting out new music and is set to release a new album in about 2 weeks. “On Me” is a banger that features an old 2Pac verse, which is always refreshing to hear.

Ace Hood is in “Go Mode”

As we get closer and closer to the release of “Starvation V,” Ace Hood keeps leaking new songs to build some hype. “Go Mode” is another dope track with a guest appearance from the boss, Rick Ross.

Joe Budden throws shots at Drake again

Last week, Budden unleashed on Drake with “Making A Murderer, Pt. 1.” This week, he’s back with more lethal bars on “Wake.” This song is great for a multitude of reasons, including the lyrical content and the cover art. Shit made me laugh. Drake will forever be more popular and successful, but his bars will never match Budden’s. Throw this on, pull up the rap genius page and really hear these lines. Incredible.

Chris Brown sings the blues

There has been a lot of really shitty stuff going on in this country the past couple days. During these sad times, many people turn to music. Brown released this song for free for (in his own words) “anybody dealing with injustice or struggle in their lives.” “My Friend” is a fucking beautiful ballad that showcases Brown’s talent and emotion and might even bring a tear to your eye.

Black Hippy is at it again

The day before ScHoolboy Q’s new album dropped (more on that later), the TDE camp blessed the world with a remix to “THat Part.” For those who don’t know who Black Hippy is, the group is made up of TDE artists Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, and ScHoolboy Q. They make great music individually and together. Enjoy.

“Blank Face” is here

The long wait for ScHoolboy Q’s sophomore album is over. The “Blank Face LP” dropped today and it is fantastic. I’ve listened to it twice through already and my early favorites are “Ride Out,” “WHateva U Want,” and “JoHn Muir.” This will be in the rotation for a few weeks for sure.

Some final notes: Jay Z released a song called “Spiritual” that I didn’t post because TIDAL is annoying, Migos released a new EP last night, and KeKe Palmer dropped a new song earlier this week as well. That’s about it, I am off to visit The Land and hang with my best friend LeBron for the weekend. Till next week.
