Young me took “cooler than the other side of the pillow” to a whole new level. Over two decades later and I’m still doing cool shit, like bringing you new music every week. Let’s do it.
Here’s your weekly dose of Nipsey Hussle
You know the deal, Nipsey is releasing a song per week until his album comes out. Like last week’s song, we get the G-funk vibe that Nipsey and some of these other West Coast artists are trying to bring back. Snoop drops off a dope verse to complete the smooth riding track.
Your Old Droog returns with new song “White Rappers”
Droog decided to respond to Lord Jamar’s comments about white rappers being “guests in the house of hip-hop” in the form of this song. His point is clear, it’s not about the color of your skin but about the music you make. Ain’t that the way it should be?
Logic flexes on “Flexicution”
Logic is one of the hottest young emcees in the game. He’s dropped two very good albums so far and claims to be working on his next two currently. “Flexicution” displays Logic’s always impressive wordplay and incredible flow. I’m sure there is more to come form Logic int he near future.
A-F-R-O debuts new single off upcoming joint LP with Marco Polo
A-F-R-O is an artist that every true fan of hip-hop should be listening to. The kid is 17 and sounds like he’s trying to revive the sound of the 90s era. He is an incredible lyricist and I am more than excited to see what his future has in store. Long live the underground.
BONUS: He’s making waves and caught the attention of Jimmy Fallon recently. Watch him perform a freestyle about random objects in the following video:
New banger alert! Juicy J brings the heat
Juicy J recruits Travis Scott for the new song “No English.” This song is an absolute banger that is sure to get the party going, something Juicy J has mastered.
EDM artist SG Lewis teams up with R&B singer Gallant
I posted about Gallant earlier this year and how good he is. Here, he lends his amazing vocal talents to SG Lewis for the new single “Holding Back.” This is perfect for those nice summer days were you throw on some tunes and kick back.
Twenty One Pilots drops off song from upcoming “Suicide Squad” movie
“Heathens” has a dark, chilling tone to it, making it a perfect fit for the Suicide Squad soundtrack. These guys just keep putting out good music.
Usher hits us with another great song
Last week, I posted about Usher’s new song “Crash.” I’ve been listening to it a lot the past week and now I’ll be adding “No Limit” to the rotation. I’m loving both songs. Speaking of this one in particular, Usher and Young Thug make an unexpectedly great duo. Thugger really brings his absolute best on this track to match the always great Usher.
Alicia Keys looks for forgiveness on new track “Hallelujah”
It’s always nice to hear from Alicia Keys, whose voice has to be one of the best of my generation. She explores the full vocal range on this track, which sees her begging God for forgiveness. You can feel the emotion in her voice, which is one of the reasons her music is so great.
Game releases “Streets of Compton”
Game has a new show coming out and in honor of that, he released a new album that will feature as the soundtrack to it. Both the show and album are called “Streets of Compton” and the album is just what you expect from Game. Heavy hitting songs about the gangs, women, and scenery of the West Coast. It’s no Documentary, but it is still a solid collection of songs.
Two EDM songs in one week?
That’s right people. I usually leave this music to my fellow writers but these two were too good to pass up. First we had “Holding Back” with SG Lewis and Gallant, now we have “Summer Lights” with the legend Tiesto featuring vocals form John Legend. Yes, the song is as good as it sounds.
YG is “Still Brazy”
YG’s released his sophomore album today that is sure to be chalk full of bangers. The singles he released leading up to the album were fire and I expect nothing less from the rest of the album.
Another week in the books. Some other things of note: Teyana Taylor has a new song with Chris Brown entitled “Freak On” that is pretty good, Rick Ross released a song called “Same Hoes” that is not very good, Lil Dicky stopped by Tim Westwood and delivered a very impressive freestyle over Drake’s “Hype” instrumental, and last but not least, Wale will be dropping a mixtape tonight so look out for that. It’s called “Summer on Sunset.” Enjoy!
