Weekly Hip-Hop/R&B Review (2/20-2/26)

I’ve always had a great sense of humor. Let’s hope you like my taste in music just as much. Here we go…

French Montana drops “Wave Gods” mixtape, “Figure It Out” is a must hear

“Figure It Out” is probably French Montana’s best song. We see French reflect on some of his recent hardships (his friend Chinx getting shot and killed and Max B getting incarcerated). Kanye gives a solid hook and Nas delivers another insightful verse, all over a truly beautiful instrumental.

Funkadelic, Kendrick, and Ice Cube combine to make the perfect ride along song

This song should be played while driving with the windows down along the interstate. Its got that great head bobbin vibe and verses from two of the greatest rappers to come straight outta Compton.

A Dream Team collab

Chris Brown released this remix “Fuck You Back to Sleep” featuring the legend Usher and the former One Direction star turned solo act Zayn Malik. If you like R&B music, I don’t see how you won’t like this.

Are you “Ready” for new Joey Bada$$?

I’ll admit that I do not listen to Joey Bada$$ enough. He is an incredibly talented artist with an old school vibe. As with much of his music, this song displays his great flow and cadence over a Statik Selektah beat.

Yuna begins comeback with DJ Premier assisted track “Places to Go”

As a huge hip-hop fan, I love DJ Premier. He’s been producing legendary hits for decades now and isn’t stopping anytime soon. This instrumental is no different from his typical production, with tons of samples and scratches to create one cohesive unit. I’ve never heard of Yuna before but she has a wonderful voice and delivers a great message on this song.

WAM stands for Weed and Money, it is also a good song

Adrian Marcel is another new name to me but I am familiar with Wale and E-40. So I decided to check out the song and I’m glad I did. The song has a west coast vibe and a DJ Mustard esque production. Easy to vibe to and all around solid performances by the three artists.

Zayn Malik makes two appearances on this review??

That’s right. Zayn gets an assist from Lil’ Wayne on the remix to his hit song “Pillowtalk” and I gotta say I dig it. Wayne kills his verse and Zayn ain’t that bad either.

And the biggest thing to happen this week is…

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis released their highly anticipated follow up to their Grammy winning debut album today. “This Unruly Mess I’ve Made” is a very solid project. I’ve listened to it three times through already and am definitely feeling it. As with Macklemore’s last project, there are some fun songs on here as well as some deeper, more thought provoking songs. The difference with this album is he seemed to try and stick more to hip-hop roots and away from the pop infused hip-hop that made his last album so commercially successful. This strategy certainly worked as I really enjoy it and believe his messages remain at the forefront of the song. There are also a ton of great features on this album (i.e. KRS-One, Chance The Rapper, DJ Premier, Idris Elba!?). Early favorite song is “Need to Know” with Chance The Rapper, who has the two best guest verses of 2016 so far (along with his verse on “Ultralight Beams” of TLOP). The intro “Light Tunnels” is another one of the stand outs as it talks about the Grammys and his experience there. I feel like this album will be in contention again this year during awards season. There is a long way to go until then, but I’m just saying I would’t be surprised.

It is also worth noting that a new Kanye West song surfaced this week called “Saint Pablo” and it is pretty dope. I’m waiting for him to release the official version to post it on here but if you’re curious, you can see a video of it being played live at a club on YouTube. See you next week!
