Weekly Hip-Hop/R&B Review (2/13-2/19)

Are we feeding my sister to the shark or are we saving her? The world may never know. If you are all like me, you’ve been listening to Kanye’s new album all week. However, there have been some other dope releases in the past week. Let’s dive right in, shall we?

Kevin Cossom releases “Grey Area” EP

Kevin Cossom oft gets over looked when thinking about R&B music. A lot of that has to do with his lack of releases over the past 5 years. “Grey Area” is a solid project and hopefully a sign of more to come.

Curren$y and Alchemist team up for “Carrollton Heights” mixtape

Curren$y usually comes through with outstanding music and this mixtape is no different. Alchemist cooks up some super smooth beats and Curren$y does his thing. One stand out track is “Fat Albert” featuring Lil’ Wayne but I definitely recommend checking out the entire project if you like what you hear.

Raheem DeVaughn wants to “Come Together” with you

This song is basically sex in the form of music. Use this information wisely and responsibly.

Scarface and Ray J: weird collab, great song

Gotta admit that I didn’t expect to see a Scarface x Ray J collab but it intrigued me enough to press play and I’m glad I did. Super dope song. I’m loving the beat on this one.

New T.I. album on the way!

I’ve been a huge T.I. fan since I started listening to hip-hop so I’m always excited when he releases new music. Though I like his older music better, he stills puts out great music and his new single “Money Talk” is just that. He delivers his verses with a quick hitting flow that has been his forte for years. Very excited for “The Dime Trap” to come out.

More Rockie Fresh

I feel like every week I’ve done this I’ve had a new, dope Rockie Fresh song on here. If he keeps putting them out, I’ll keep posting them. This freestyle is fire and that beat is pure gold.

Ella Mai, you have a new fan

I stumbled upon Ella Mai this week and I am very happy I did. She is signed to DJ Mustard’s label and released a 6 song EP entitled “TIME EP” and it is awesome. I can definitely see Ella blowing up in the near future if she keeps making music like these 6 songs. It certainly doesn’t hurt to have Mustard on the beat hoe.

Akon drops a radio ready, extremely catchy new song “Good Girls Lie”

Akon rarely makes bad music. “Good Girls Lie” will be on radios everywhere in the coming weeks and that’s not a problem with me. His new album figures to have a good mix of pop style music and more traditional R&B/hip-hop style.

Macklemore preps for new album release by dropping “Buckshot”

Say what you want about Macklemore, but he pays his respect to the hip-hop legends unlike many other artists. He put out the tracklist for his new album and I’m very much looking forward to hearing it. There are some great features on there and one of them was this track with DJ Premier and KRS-One. Everyone killed this track.

That’s about it for this week. Look out for releases from Yo Gotti and French Montana today. And we had an extremely dope Semple Sessions last night so make sure to look for that early next week. Until next time. Deuces.
