Arguably one of my top 5 favorite Kanye songs, I had to share this record with you guys before Thanksgiving. In this classic song off his debut album, The College Dropout, Kanye shows off his familial side, rapping about different family experiences that we can all relate to. Contrary to what you may think, this song is actually not about Kanye’s life, it’s about singer Tarrey Torae. You probably don’t know who she is, but she actually did a lot of side vocals on this album and this song (she’s singing “they don’t mean a thang”), and she helped Kanye write this song. Kanye wanted to make a song that had real life experiences, but he didn’t have any siblings growing up so he didn’t have any inspiration. Torae, who was the oldest of 48(!) grandkids on her mom’s side and the middle of 36(!) grandkids on her dad’s side. She gave him the inspiration for taking baths with cousins, fitting 6 kids in a bed, and the last line of the song, “Let’s get Stevie outta jail” is actually about her godbrother. All in all, the penultimate track of my favorite Kanye album is the perfect song to get you in the mood for fam vibes tomorrow. Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving tomorrow, and enjoy spending time with your family.
