In honor of the biopic coming out tonight at midnight, what better way to pay tribute to the world’s most dangerous rap group than write about their music. N.W.A. changed the game in one of the most dramatic ways possible. They rapped hardcore about topics that previous musicians didn’t dare talk about. They were violent, gangsta, controversial, and straight up effin dope. Their music was so different and hard-hitting, it was banned from the radio (yet they still sold over 10 million copies of their albums). Their first album, “Straight Outta Compton,” is widely considered one of the best rap albums of all time and is full of classics.
One such classic is the title track “Straight Outta Compton.” This song is absolutely nuts. Dr. Dre and DJ Yella produced the beat, which will forever be one of the best. It hits hard and forces the listener to nod their head as Ice Cube, MC Ren, and Eazy-E tear it up. Cube comes in hot with one of the best opening lines to any song ever and it never slows down from there. All three spit extremely dope verses that make it clear not to fuck with these guys. Back to the beat. The drums and constant hi-hat throughout the song create the hardcore atmosphere. Then you hear the guitar riff and the long alarm like noise and BOOM! you’re ready to GO! Dre and Yella add scratches, gun shots, and other sounds here and there that complete the epic instrumental.
Check out two of my other favorite songs and go see the biopic “Straight Outta Compton,” in theaters August 14.
