When I think Macklemore, I can’t help to automatically think back to the most overplayed song of summer 2012: Thrift Shop. And when I saw that Macklemore released a new single today, I really wasn’t sure what to expect. After listening to Growing Up, I may or may not have shed a tear. Macklemore has definitely grown as a rapper and a person.
This song is dedicated to Macklemore’s two month old daughter, Sloane, who was born on May 29th. In the song, Macklemore gives advice to his daughter about life, and how he wants to be the best father and be there for her, but conflicts with his fame and profession (i.e. having to go on tour, etc.). To me, the song has a similar message to what Jay-Z and Kanye did on their Watch the Throne track New Day, where they both gave fatherly messages to their future children. The soft guitar and snare line make for one relaxing and smooth beat, and even though Ed Sheeran, who, according to Teej, “looks like a gay leprechaun” (I completely agree), I totally respect the guy and his vocals on the chorus are awesome. Take a moment to listen to Macklemore’s touching message, and share it along. I’m sure you’ll love it.
