Where do I begin? This is my first post so it has to be classic and since it’s Thursday, why not pick a classic throwback. There are so many to choose from but one song in particular kept coming to mind over and over again. So I’m going to take you back to 1992, the year the world changed forever, the beginning of something great (me).
We’ve all gone through heartbreak throughout our lives. Whether it be losing a game or losing a loved one, we deal with these things differently. Pete Rock and CL Smooth chose to make one of the dopest songs of all time in honor of their fallen friend Troy Dixon. Sadness can sometimes bring out the best in people and it certainly did on the track “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” (get the Troy connection?). The smooth beat created by Pete Rock features a soothing saxophone and a calming baseline for CL Smooth to rap over. CL Smooth (who was 22 years old at the time) reminisces about his past, his family, his upbringing, and ultimately about Troy being there for him “rain or shine” in his verses. He paints a picture with his lyrics in this song and it serves as a beautiful tribute that I’m sure Troy would have approved of. This song will forever live on as one of the best hip-hop songs of all time.
I always think of two things when I hear this song 1) damn, that beat is incredible, and 2) I really want to play NBA Street Vol. 2 (if you don’t know what I’m talking about here, I feel bad for you). Stop everything, take four minutes of your time, and just listen to this track so you can really appreciate what these two legends did.
