‘brunch.’ by The Zells

I had brunch for dinner three times this past week. Not sure if it’s because this song is awesome, or because I was eating what was left in my fridge.

Whatever the case, this song is a change up for The Zells slowing down the pace and providing a tap along drum and bass beat with a melodic guitar intro and a catchy hook of a chorus.

It is highly recommended that you go eat some ‘brunch.’ while listening to ‘brunch.’

‘Grand Scheme’ by Nvsv #tbt

Motivation at its finest. At times life can feel misdirected or random, so it’s important to plan.

In order to make that plan, you gotta work day in and day out – with no excuses.

Well, Nsvs has been doing exactly that – scheming, planning for February 10, 2019 when he will be dropping his newest album AMETHYST.

I can’t wait for it, but until then jump back into Nsvs’s latest released album LVL 3 and give ‘Grand Scheme’ a listen!

‘Rolling Stoned’ by Leila Rhodes

The first minute is by far the best part of this song in my ears. The build up and production of sound that meshes and comes together is melodic, perfectly timed, and soothingly catchy.

The chill rapping with echoing and the drawn out rhymes are subtle but executed to perfection.

The piano and guitar combination post chorus is prime.

I can’t wait to hear more of what Leila Rhodes creates musically.

‘El Gato Del Fuego’ by The Clock Reads

Saucy Jazz. Salsa & Jazz? The crescendos, the build up, the rifts, the lines. Yeah, this song is one of a kind.

The saxophone is special, but all instrumentals combined make it 8 minutes of heaven – this song hits all the right spots.

The Clock Reads is something else 👌🏼

‘Don’t Worry’ by Chalk Dinosaur

Follow That Feeling.

Don’t Worry.

Can’t stress enough how chill the vibes are in this tune and the sheer creativity and quality of production on this track and all Chalk Dinosaur’s tracks.

Their music is introspective, thought provoking, and evokes emotion that leaves the listener willingly vulnerable to the emotions they’re feeling, yet yearning for more of that feeling.

‘One Piece’ by BBGuns

A house like beat with a fruity tooty flute typa twirl in the background keeps this single fresha than a muhhfugga 🤘🏼

Bass slappin’ with strung out guitar vibes brings the sounds altogether.

Come Together. Right Now. Let’s Unify.

And give BBGuns a listen would ya – their indie hip hop sound is crazy unique and hella good different than what I’ve been hearing anywhere lately.

‘Space Citizen (Cosmic Man)’ by Starship Mantis

Piano rifts doe.

Jazzy, funky, trippyyy.

Saxophone solos with gnarly bass lines.

Can I go to Mars and listen to this song?

The high pitch of the vocals keeping this song silky smooth.

My regret of 2018 was showing up to Spirit on NYE an hour late and missing Starship Mantis.

Good thing y’all can catch Starship Mantis and Tribe Eternal On February 15th at The Marquee in Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh – Pittsburgh’s new venue!

Don’t worry, I didn’t forget about the drum solo either 🤘🏼

See you there!?

‘1/2 Past Five’ by Jor

Bars Bars Bars.

Beats Beats Beats.

Dare I say Jor’s bars have a Mac style to them? No doubt Jor has his own sound, but I can hear it in the slightest on his debut album, Light Soul which kind of makes sense considering Big Jerm was the producer of the album.

My favorite aspect of the album is the lyricism and the beats. Straightforward but solid and down to earth. Real recognizing real with this album.

Peep it on all major streaming platforms 🤙🏼

#tbt ‘Ready’ by Tairey ft. Kirko Bangz

The only time I’ve seen Tairey live was in 2018 at Spirit for The City Music Festival, it was poppin’ – good energy, legitimate rapping and overall talent. I’m READY to see another performance, so I’m hitting today’s beat with a tbt on this track by Tairey ft. Kirko Bangz !

The chill-laidback production, piano, and beat Tairey and Kirko Bangz made for this song make it highly underrated, for real. I mean under 4,000 plays on Spotify is whack…

If you haven’t heard of Tairey, check out the info below (s/o Good Sports, In the Rough, and PGHCityPaper. Go and do yourself a favor and listen to Tairey!

‘Neverland’ by Tommy Girl & Nikola

Mysterious, trippy, intriguing, apocalyptic??

A lot of thoughts come to mind when hearing this song, and I always enjoy songs that make me think.

Synthy piano rifts with cinematic, explosive yet subtle background sounds and bumpin’ bass make for a stellar production by Nikola @sincerelynikola

Tommy Girl matches her tone and energy perfectly with the sound put out in this track.

I’ve never been to Neverland, but no one is truly in control, so why not?

‘The Fool’ by The Hills and the Rivers

A sweet melody opens up with guitar, followed by timely violin and banjo.

The three instrumental pieces combined with double vocals makes this such a memorable piece.

I’d rather be the magician than the fool, but this song was too good not to highlight for today’s beat.

The Hills and the Rivers (Pittsburgh ya dig) released their latest album The Fool and The Magician on May 18, 2018.

Love the truth as much as you love yourself and others, and you will no longer be the fool.

OR to continue NOT being a fool, check out The Hills and the Rivers on all streaming platforms and check out ‘The Magician’ – a song and music video below!

‘Monkey Around’ by JACK SWING

Jack Swing released their latest single ‘Monkey Around’ along with a music video on December 31st 2018:

Immediately starting off with heavy bass and low-pitched lyrics, the edgy song gets off to a fast start.

The pace picks up with the chorus showcasing some funky guitar rifts during and after.

Then interestingly enough, the beat turns into a slow paced segment leaving the listener curious to where the song will be heading, only for it to get back to Monkeyin’ Around 🤘🏼

Check out the intriguing video above and check out more of Jack Swing on all streaming platforms.

‘Feeling Alright’ by Rebelution

Been feelin’ good feel’ alright yeah.

Rebelution is one of my favorite Reggae bands, and it’s been awhile since I’ve been jammin’ to reggae.

I’m about to get back into it, so let me know of any Pittsburgh Reggae bands or any dope reggae bands you might know about.

Stay lifted.

‘Train of Thought’ by Brittney Chantele & Treble NLS

Brittney Chantele & Treble NLS dish out the thoughts that quite often all of us are going through. Our minds can run a million miles a minute, and our thoughts tend to never be silent. Yet, this song is all about letting that train pass, so that there can be clarity and serenity within our thoughts.

The two remind listeners that life is a balance, and it would be foolish to ignore our thoughts completely. It’s essential to hone in on the thoughts that help us grow, and let the ones that drag us down stay on the train that passes us by.

‘Honest Man’ by Fat Night

For 2019, all I want is to do the best I can. Man, does this song motivate me to do just that.

No matter what happens in 2019, one foot in front of the other is what I want. I want to succeed, fail, try, do, and all while doing that, I simply want to do the best I can while being an honest man.

Honestly (ha), I feel good about being an honest, good person towards others and even myself. But, if I’m being honest with myself, I have room to grow in 2019 from 2018. I want to move more in 2019 in all phases of life.

Movement > Stagnation.

Ambition > Complacency.

The funk, R & B, soul jams that Fat Night has created have caught my attention in only 24 hours of listening. With that…

Fat Night plays at Spirit Lodge in Pittsburgh tonight, and I can’t wait to see them play!

Local artist Isaiah Small and band Lofi Deplhi will be opening. Show starts at 9!

‘happyBB’ by MOD SUN

One of my favorite songs to listen to in 2018, I wish everyone happiness in 2019 and onward!

A crazy banger all about individuality, energy, and inner happiness.

Cheers to me not giving a shit about filming this song live and just vibing in the moment:

MOD SUN – Movement On Dreams Stand Under None

Whatever brings you happiness, go get it in 2019!

‘Bravo’ by Uptowne Buddha

Uptowne Buddha’s ability to mix rap, jazz, and hip hop to produce a soul, funky sound is what’s up – Bravo!

Uptowne Buddha is based out of Cleveland, and after seeing them perform in 2016, I have been following them ever since including a show in Pittsburgh this year.

My favorite song from them is ‘Written In The Stars’ but the trumpet, beat, and vibe to ‘Bravo’ is what makes it today’s beat.

Go check out Uptowne Buddha right now!

‘Funeral’ by Forget Brennan

This song makes me think. About everything and nothing at the same time. I had listened to it prior to hearing it live on Mod Sun’s tour in Pittsburgh but Forget Brennan’s performance kept me listening long after.

Are we desensitized by everything from our phones to our TVs to this digital world we live in?

“My iPhone says what my TV says, and the texts I sent are all left on read.”

At points in the song, I find the somber guitar sound of it all linking me to skepticism, perhaps cynicism, about the future of this world. Yet, at points in the song I feel a sense of individuality and optimism with who I can be, who we can all be as humans.

“The joke is you, the joke is us, the joke is everybody anywhere.”

“The box is you. The box is them. The box is everybody anywhere.”

If I take this song literally as in “no one goes to funeral anymore” then maybe foolishly I find happiness in the hope that it means we have become a generation participating in celebrations of life. Or maybe it means that we are unphased by all the loss and tragedy the world is constantly throwing in our face on every screen every day.

In my life, I want to hold conversations with people that are thought provoking, meaningful, and deep. The same goes for the music I listen to.

Maybe Forget Brennan had specific meaning and intention for this song…maybe not.

That’s the beauty in it.

‘Buffalo Rose’ by Buffalo Rose

“I’ll be your Soldier and you’ll be my Buffalo Rose.”

I recently gave Buffalo Rose a listen and I immediately jumped in. Long car rides with soothing sounds are meant for each other.

A unique take on folk and bluegrass, I am making it a point to see Buffalo Rose early in 2019:

Featured Artist of the Week: Clara Kent

‘Winter Song’ is Clara Kent’s latest release. The holiday song is warm to the soul, like a cup of hot cocoa on Christmas morning.

Her latest performance was at Club Cafe on December 20th curated by Dauntless Records. The show included performances by Justo Ontario, Aria Jay, Clara Kent, and DeonRaps with Arie Cole DJing the event throughout.

Justo Ontario opened up the night with music that showcased his vocal range and energetic stage presence. Aria Jay followed with a stellar crowd engaging performance, and DJed her own show. DeonRaps crushed the stage with his fierce rhymes and ended the night on an upbeat note.

In between AriaJay and DeonRaps, Clara Kent performed.

Clara Kent sang a heart throbbing showcase of her latest release ‘Winter Song.’ There may have been actual tears in the audience after she was finished. Her ability to encapsulate the audience through volume control, vibrato, and sheer beauty of tone and pitch is what makes her performance so memorable.

She followed ‘Winter Song’ up with a couple of songs highlighting her ability to tap into her hip hop side and even rapped in the last song – Words. A full range of Clara’s talents were on display:

Just yesterday, the group in which she is lead singer for, Tribe Eternal, announced that she would be performing for Sofar Sounds in DC, Philly, and Pittsburgh. She confirmed today via Instagram @iamclarakent, and she already has one performance for Sofar Sounds in DC in 2018.

She released her latest album ‘Aura’ in 2018 as well, and also released one of my favorite 2018 singles – ‘Loner Type.’ It was a breakout year for Clara Kent, so make sure you keep an eye on what she’ll be putting out in 2019!

Go listen to ‘Winter Song,’ ‘Loner Type’ and the full album Aura right now! And follow her on social media @iamclarakent!

‘Renegade’ by Styx

The Jig is Up, The News Is Out.

If you’re from Pittsburgh, stop here, grab a cold one, and turn on your TV to gear up for the ‘LERS. You know this is a Pittsburgh staple.

If you don’t know, now you know thanks to the Post Gazette how this song came about.

‘I Just Thought…’ by Linwood

Heavy bass, catchy electric piano repetition alongside eery but intriguing sounds throughout make for today’s beat.

img_1848.png

When I’m low key chillin’ this is a go to song. When I want to fly away into my no thought space, I get down to this song. The chorus is easy to ride along with, and provides for a relaxed feel.

Go give this song a listen and give Linwood a follow on Instagram @xxlinwood and on twitter @LinwoodRandolph

And while you’re there peep his latest release ‘Let Me Find Out Freestyle’

“I’m nothing special, I just thought that you might want to fly away”

‘Hennessy’ by My Favorite Color

Welp, I’m officially shook.

‘Hennessy’ released today and after listening to this song, I was laughing out loud…in a good way. I can’t tell if I never want to drink Hennessy again, or if I want to drink a fifth to the face tonight to see if I can I can wake up with throw up in my eye brows…

The hysterical energy that My Favorite Color puts out on this track along with the hilariously crisp production value by one800 makes this song an epically enjoyable satire. This song is different – isn’t that what it’s all about?

Cheers to Hennessy
